Student Project: Idiom Poster
Objective: created a poster that visually literalizes an idiom. Use colors without any gradients, effects or filters to create depth. Incorporate typography in a fun and unique way.
Design Process:
After going through several idioms, I chose "loose cannon." I imagined a cannon rolling wildly down a hill, being chased by a cannonball. I developed that concept further and created a design where the cannonball had a butterfly net to catch the cannon, alluding to classic cartoons. To create depth and perspective, I illustrated the poster with mountains in the background.
For the illustrations, I created shapes with no stroke weight in order to emphasize the use of contrasting colors to create the images. To give depth to objects such as the wheels and the net, I used the Blend Tool. All the shadows are created by changing the color values in the objects.
For the typography, I chose a font that had a rocky texture, which fit nicely with the theme. I then warped the word "cannon" to further emphasize the wildness of the main subject.
Color Theory: I chose a cool color palette in the foreground and a neutral palette for the background to emulate how landscapes fade in color at greater distances.
This project works nicely into a poster, but it could easily translate to imagery for a marketing campaign.
